Third Party Auditors too tied to the Industry – USAToday

Last week the USA Today newspaper blasted 3rd party auditors for being to tied to the industry.

They argue that as the food company is paying for the audit then there is conflict of interest.

The  specific examples they gave included where a nut producer was given a superior rating (no names mentioned) while at the time it was producing salmonella contaminated peanut paste. The also highlighted the recent listeria which has killed at least 30 people, where the company was giving a 96% hygiene rating.

There has to accountability with the 3rd party  auditing programmes and why in some cases the auditor has missed key issues. However a 3rd party audit is only a snap of the operation of any given time.

This reply reminds me of my early days as a QC where when something went wrong productions first comments was also why didn’t QC pick it up.

Accountability must also stop at the business owners and the senior management in ensuring they are taking food safety seriously and have a sufficient risk assessment programme in place.
